16.40 - 17.30  Debate:  The Netherlands and the Great Green Wall of Africa

The final part was a debate, moderated by Lodewijk de Waal. The debate focused on the question how Dutch society can contribute to the success of the Great Green Wall of Africa. Madeleen Helmer, secretary of the Great Green Wall Initiative explained the origin of the initiative and the potential to make this initiative a symbol of practical climate adaptation in Africa. The initiative is relevant from a range of perspectives: food security, disaster preparedness, water security, sustainable energy and nature restoration. It can bring together humanitarian, development and conservation NGO’s, scientists and the business sector.
Ton Dietz, director of the African Studies Centre suggested a more large scale approach, comparable with China, but agreed a bottom-up approach may be more realistic in Africa. Frans van den Boom, director NCDO, stated that the Great Green Wall Initiative fits very well in the new approach of NCDO to involve society in international issues and offered his co-operation. Also Liesbeth van der Kruit, CSR director Eureko, saw potential for a role of the business sector and discussed the potential for linking tree planting to micro-insurance. Ownership is a key issue here.
Edu Willemse, external relation manager SNV and others expressed their willingness to work with the Great Green Wall Initiative, that generally was seen as an attractive new approach to involve Dutch society.
