Normally you should just ride your bike to school or work, save on electricity and gas as much you can, switch to a green energy provider (or produce your own) and think about what you eat and where (why) you travel. But 2009 is not a normal year. It's a chance. To really solve the problem. And it may just be the last one.

From December 7th till 18th 2009 world leaders will gather in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, where agreement must be reached on the new international climate treaty, that is to replace the Kyoto Protocol. This treaty binds countries to specific climate goals, like emissions reductions, for the year 2020. The process is guided by the insights of the IPCC and the general consensus within the scientific community. The upcoming decade will be crucial, in order to stay below truly dangerous atmospheric and oceanic carbon concentrations, that may distort climate and life on Earth for centuries to come. Therefore climate goals for 2020 will have to be tough - and achieved.
  • Copenhagen Climate Action - Don't miss out on the party!
Unfortunately the most important scientific message is still ignored by most world leaders. According to IPCC, in order not to risk a more than 50 percent chance of dangerous and escalating climate change, all industrialised countries will have to commit themselves to an emission reduction of at least 40 percent by 2020. Presently, just months from the all-decisive climate summit, parties are miles away from doing what they will have to do.

Now how can we change that? It's simple. We will have to commit ourselves to the cause. We will have to demand leadership from our leaders. We will not accept failure.

Success in Copenhagen depends on many things. But we will have to keep ourselves focussed on the most crucial factor. Forty. 40.

Copenhagen Climate Conference: 40 percent less CO2

40. Such a strong idea it ACTUALLY FITS on the backside of a beermat! Please do send us your own 40 statements.

Do you want to help save the World - for real? Then do these three crucial things - and make yourself a hero:

1. spread 40
Help and spread the word, help raise attention, wherever you can. Try and reach whoever comes on your path. And make people connect these two all-important words: 40, Copenhagen.

By repeating 40 as often as we can, we will man the barricades and prevent any slippery deals to come from Copenhagen. We will not allow a deal that does not mention 40.

2. sign up
Sign any relevant petition you can. Copenhagen campaigns form organically, everywhere. Don't choose, support them all. It's a classic. It won't hurt. And don't miss the chance it may actually do good. NGO's do have a say and you do have the power to place that much needed exclamation mark.

3. march

Turn up in Copenhagen, you, yourself. And bring all your friends and family. It's too important. You're needed.

If ever protesting had a common cause it will be this December in Copenhagen, where we will stand to present all life on this planet.

So, make a scratch in your agenda. December 12th. It'll be a Saturday. Come to Copenhagen (or, if you really can't make that, join a local rally closer to home). Read more about it on GlobalClimateCampaign.org
